In its most significant pivot since the invention of the action camera, GoPro officially announced the MISSION 1 Series on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Moving beyond its traditional roots, GoPro is entering the professional cinema market with a lineup of three compact, rugged cameras built around a massive 1-inch sensor and the brand-new GP3 processor.
This new parallel lineup is not a replacement for the HERO series but a high-end alternative for filmmakers and professional creators.
1. The Core Technology: 1-Inch Sensor & GP3 Chip
The entire MISSION 1 series is built on a shared technological foundation that leapfrogs current action camera standards.
- 50MP 1-Inch Sensor: Featuring a surface area nearly 74% larger than the HERO13, this sensor uses a Quad Bayer design. In low light, it fuses pixels into “giant” 3.2µm clusters to capture 14 stops of dynamic range.
- GP3 Processor: A 5nm “AI-Enhanced” chip that delivers twice the pixel processing power of its predecessor. It includes a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for real-time AI noise reduction and subject tracking.
- Thermal Mastery: The GP3 chip is so efficient that GoPro claims it solves the long-standing overheating issues of small cameras, allowing for sustained high-resolution recording.
2. The Lineup: Three “Missions”
GoPro has introduced three distinct models to cater to different professional needs.
| Model | Key Features | Target Audience |
| MISSION 1 PRO | Flagship: 8K60, 4K240, 1080p960. Open Gate 4:3 support. | Professional Cinematographers |
| MISSION 1 PRO ILS | Interchangeable Lens: Features a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount. | Mirrorless & Cinema Users |
| MISSION 1 | Standard: 8K30, 4K120. Fixed 159° Field of View lens. | High-end Content Creators |
3. Professional Features & Design
The MISSION 1 series introduces several “firsts” for the GoPro ecosystem:
- Open Gate Capture: All models support full-sensor “Open Gate” recording, allowing creators to crop for both vertical (TikTok/Reels) and horizontal (YouTube/Cinema) formats from a single file.
- Pro Audio & Log: Includes 32-bit float audio across four microphones and GP-Log2 with 10-bit color for advanced grading. It also features Timecode Sync for multi-camera professional shoots.
- Rugged Cinema: Despite the high-end specs, the MISSION 1 and PRO remain waterproof to 66ft (20m) without a housing.
- Improved Hardware: Features a 14% larger OLED rear display and “chunky” raised buttons designed specifically for use with gloves.
4. Battery and Ecosystem
The series introduces the Enduro 2 battery (2150mAh), which leverages the GP3’s efficiency to provide:
- 5+ hours of recording at 1080p30.
- 3+ hours of recording at 4K30.
- Compatibility: The Enduro 2 is backward-compatible with the HERO13 Black, though using older batteries in the MISSION 1 will result in shorter runtimes.
5. Availability and Pricing
- Pre-orders: Open on May 21, 2026.
- Global Release: Standard and PRO models arrive May 28, 2026. The PRO ILS and specialized bundles (Grip, Creator, and Ultimate Creator editions) are scheduled for Q3 2026.
- Price Reveal: Exact pricing is being kept under wraps until the NAB Show (April 19–22), where GoPro will host a dedicated booth.
